The Oscars are Coming! The Oscars are Coming!

Best-Picture-Oscars-2019Well, it’s that time of year again. The Oscars are just around the corner being broadcast  on ABC this Sunday, February 24 at 8:00pm. I hunkered down and saw all of the best picture nominees and decided upon my favorites. Ironically, The Favourite is my favorite of the year. What is astonishing to me is that I usually do not like period pieces of that era. I simply saw The Favourite due to it being nominated. I was pleasantly surprised by just how good it was and highly recommend this film if you haven’t seen it yet. That being said, I also think it is actually going to win best picture.

Out of the other best picture nominees, Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody stand out the most. However, even though I would name Vice as my number two movie of the year, I would not name Bohemian Rhapsody as my third. My third favorite is Roma. Roma was just a better motion picture all around but I would probably not see it again whereas I would watch Bohemian Rhapsody once a day, everyday.

Other nominees, at least in my opinion were good but not great. Green Book was very good and if it were 25 years ago it may be a stunning film but in 2019 it is a movie we have seen time and time again and while an important story, as a movie it really just repeats on the societal pathos that the world has become.

Black Panther was excellent and as a self-proclaimed comic book geek, I took great pleasure in this being the first super-hero movie to be nominated for a best picture. Here’s the thing though, it’s not. There were many better super-hero movies than Black Panther that came before it that should have been nominated in their respective years – Batman Begins, Unbreakable, Iron Man, The Dark Knight, and, of course, Superman (1978). However, if the Academy is now on board with being open to nominating super-hero movies, Black Panther is a very solid first choice

Black KkKlansman was a great story but the movie itself just fell flat for me. I didn’t care for the way it was edited together and ultimately the sum of its parts didn’t add up for me.

Speaking of falling flat – do I dare speak its name? A Star is Born. Is it? No. No, definitely not. A star is definitely not born here. This movie had everything that would usually speak to me – rock and roll, original songs, casting real musicians into lead roles, casting actors as musicians. I was ready for it. However, halfway through the movie I decided I couldn’t take another minute of it and walked out. This movie was like a parody of a showbiz movie but taking it self extremely seriously which ultimately was a fail for me. Too bad actually because from what I saw of it Lada Gaga was excellent and deserved a better movie to be in. Obviously a lot of people liked it and it did well. Maybe I just expected too much from it.

I always look forward to the Oscars or as I call it, my superbowl. This year should be interesting without a host but it may be even better. Even though a host is what we are used to, it may be time for a change.

Whomever you are rooting for to win, enjoy the show and hopefully they will announce the right winner. Looking at you La La Land.
